Travel to Atar from Tidjikja via a comfortable 4×4 Hilux (approx. 5 hours). Check into your hotel, unwind, and then dive into the local markets. Treat yourself to a delightful dinner featuring traditional Mauritanian cuisine.
🏰 **Day 14: Oudane and Richat Structure**
Head to Oudane, a charming town 90km north of Atar, celebrated for its ancient architecture. En route, marvel at the Richat Structure, known as the “Eye of the Sahara.” Return to Oudane for a night’s stay.
🕌 **Day 15: Chinguetti Exploration**
After a hearty breakfast, drive to Chinguetti, one of Mauritania’s oldest and best-preserved desert towns. Explore its historic mosque and libraries, UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Overnight stay in Chinguetti.
🏜️ **Day 16: Big Sand Dunes Adventure**
Venture to the Big Sand Dunes on camels, just 10km from Chinguetti. Discover the Singing Dune, which hums with the wind. Return to Chinguetti for another night.
🌴 **Day 17: Terjit Oasis Excursion**
Travel from Chinguetti to Zarga Mountain, where Bedouin and Berber communities await. Immerse yourself in their way of life. The journey continues to the Terjit Oasis for an overnight stay in a traditional desert camp.
🗿 **Day 18: Benamira Monolith and Iron Train**
Visit the Benamira Monolith, a prehistoric stone formation. Head to Choum to catch the famous Iron Train, transporting iron ore across the Sahara Desert. Experience a night on the train.
🌊 **Day 19: Noudhibou and Banc d’Arguin**
Take a leisurely break in Noudhibou, exploring its wonders. Then, set off for Banc d’Arguin, spending the night at Arkeiss Camp.
🛶 **Day 20: Island Adventure**
Board a morning boat at 8 am to reach the stunning island 🏝️. Enjoy lunch and then drive back to Nouakchott.

Oualata (or Walata) is one of the cornerstone trade cities in the trans-Saharan Trade Route. It is now an UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the farthest of the ancient Mauritanian cities to reach from Nouakchott. Traveling to this city requires passing through Tichit, so it can almost always be seen together with another of the four ancient cities. You’ll also pass awesome sites on the way as well, like the Elephant Mountains. It is rich with history as a cultural and religious center as the southern terminus of the centuries-old trade route, and, fittingly, the home of a manuscript museum.
